The aviation industry is massive, it is growing at a tremendous pace and every year millions upon millions of people fly. In order to cater for this huge traffic, airports need to be big, and they are. Here is a list of the largest airports in the world. Note that the following list is by area.
This huge airport is situated in the northeast of Beijing’s city center and surrounded by the Shunyi District. It is owned and operated by a company which is controlled by the state. It is also one of the busiest airports in the world as far as passenger traffic goes. The airport has a spectacular construction style giving off a futuristic and elegant feel. The area of the airport proper is around 2330 hectare making it one of the largest airports by size.
The Cairo International Airport covers an area of 2550 hectares and is the primary hub for several airline such as Alexandria Airlines, Egypt Air, AlMasria Universal Airlines, and AMC Airlines as well as several others. The airport is located in the northeast of the city and is the busiest in Egypt with 14,711,500 passengers, it has 3 terminals for movements of flight. It rightly deserves a place in this list of the largest airports in the world.
Located in the northwest of Chicago, Illinois it is the third busiest airport in all of the United States of America, and grabs the sixth position in the world’s busiest airports by passenger count. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is currently serving as second largest hub for United Airlines, American Airlines and Air Choice One. Owned by Chicago Department of Aviation also control its operations while O’Hare covers 2610 ha with total passenger volume of 70,075,204 and 881,933 aircraft movements.
Popularly known as Suvarnabhumi Airport Bangkok International Airport, it is home to most of the domestic flights of Thailand and caters to all of the international flights. As of 2014 it had a total of more than 289,000 movements annually following more than 38 million international passengers and around 8 million domestic passengers. These are huge numbers which give witness to the massive scale on which this airport operates. Its area is 2980 hectares making it one the largest airports of the world easily. Its construction is amazing and gives splendid views of its different buildings, lounges and other well-built departments.
Its total land area is a whopping 77,600 hectares (192,000 acres). However the actual utilized airport area of 3,675 hectares (9,080 acres), or 36.75 square kilometers
This massive airport has an area of 3050 hectares. It is located northeast of Madrid’s Puerta Del Sol. Annually it caters to over 41 million passengers with total movements of 342,601 each year. The hub for Iberia and Air Europe has highest number of flight operations in all Europe and considered as second busiest airbus routes in Europe.
