The great white neighbor of the United States has been on friendly terms with them throughout most of its history, and Canadians visiting the US and vice versa is a very common occurrence. In fact the natural beauty of Canada with its picturesque wilderness, and popular cities like Montreal and Vancouver attract many Americans each year. While crossing the border is mostly hassle free, there are certain things US citizens must know before visiting Canada.
In days past, only a valid driver’s license would suffice for border patrol – not anymore. All US citizens wishing to visit Canada must carry a valid passport or its equivalent such as a NEXUS Card or an enhanced driver’s license. However children under 15 only require a birth certificate or a certified copy of it.
Look up on the things that you’re allowed to take across the border. Some things may surprise you. Like you can bring your pet (with documentation of course) but not fresh fruits. You can buy stuff like liquor and cigarettes at duty free shops but only in limited amounts. Also if you plan to go hunting, be sure to check on what guns Canada marks as legal, and bring the proper paperwork for them. Any gifts which you may bring that are valued at over $60 are subject to tax.
While your US driver’s license is perfectly valid across the border, driving laws are slightly different. Canada uses the metric system hence instead of miles/hour the speed limits are posted in km/hour, be wary of this small detail. Cellphones must be used hands free while driving and if you are driving with a minor in the car, you cannot smoke. Because of the snowy weather driving can be really dangerous; make sure your car is properly equipped for the treacherous conditions and if it’s not rent one that is. Take an emergency kit with you when you head out and make sure your cellphone is charged.
If you head to Canada without alerting the cellphone network company you may incur huge data roaming charges. So alert them before going, they are sure to have a reasonably priced roaming plan for ventures into Canada. If you don’t, then be sure to keep data roaming off and only connect to the internet through Wi-Fi.
While entry is fairly easy for someone with proper documentation, sometimes a person can be denied from crossing the border. This is usually due to suspicious behavior, Driving under influence, lack of proper documentation or traveling with children who are not your own.
Large cities and some border towns accept the US dollar, but most areas only accept Canadian currency, so be sure to exchange US dollars into Canadian ones beforehand.
Canada has free healthcare for its citizens, visitors must pay.
So if you plan to visit Canada anytime soon, these things are vital to keep in mind.
